Hailey’s Monkey Baby Quilt

There is something in the water at work.  I say that because I think half the team was pregnant in the past year.  Ok, ok, so only 3 out of 20, but you get the idea.  The young woman sitting nearest me LOVES monkeys, and I knew she needed a special quilt for her little bundle of joy.  I had many ideas, one of them mostly together, but it didn’t feel right.  And then I saw this one and knew it would be perfect.

This was my first time doing applique.  I was a little intimidated at first, but the instructions were so straightforward and simple that I knew I could do it!  I printed the template pieces onto regular paper and used spray adhesive to attach it to the paper side of the fusible web.  Then I ironed it to the fabric, cut it all out, and ironed it in place.  Then I just did a simple straight stitch about 1/4″ in on the appliqued pieces.  I did try to do a zigzag stitch, but my old machine just wasn’t quite up to the task.

This hot pink mottled pink fleece sure is bright, but my coworker was going girly-girl pink in the nursery, so I knew she’d like this.  When I started the quilting aspect, I echo-stitched around the entire design, and then did random FMQ of loops and swirls around the blue fabric.  Then I stitched in the ditch around the borders.

Here’s a closer detail shot so you can see the echo stitching, and also the variegated thread I used.

I saved the best picture for last:  Baby Hailey hanging out with her new friend.
